(September 7, 2008)- Temple Police searched for several hours Sunday evening for a missing man who has Down syndrome.

Joshua Engelbrecht, 22, of Temple disappeared around 12:20 p.m., Sunday after he walked out of church.

He was found safe at a local Wal-Mart at about 7:45 p.m.

Police searched through the late afternoon and early evening, setting up a mobile command post at the intersection of 1st Street and Calhoun.

A Department of Public Safety helicopter was used to search from the air.

Officers say Engelbrech lives in a group home in eastern Bell County and had told friends about wanting to visit his dad in Crawford.

As a parent of an adult with disabilities we must find some way to protect them from themselves when they are in our absence. I feel it would be beneficial for these members to wear some sort of jewelry that has a tracking device. Sort of a lo-jac for our loved ones that is stylish yet highly functional. There must be something out there to help ensure they can be safe in their attempt to live an independent life.

This is very sad. I hope the police and family find him and he is safe. Who was watching him? How could he have walked out of church and then disappear?
