(May 19, 2006)—A drunken driver whose car smashed into a Mennonite migrant farming family's van as he drove the wrong way on Interstate 35 has been convicted of murder.
Twenty-three-year-old Fermine Castillo faces up to life in prison for the accident, which killed 20-year-old Isaac Dyck and hospitalized nine others.
The Williamson County jury in Georgetown also found him guilty of intoxication manslaughter for the 2005 crash.
The jury began hearing evidence in the sentencing phase of his trial Friday in Georgetown.
Castillo has a history of three drunken driving convictions.
He was driving his Jeep Cherokee on Interstate 35 near Jarrell when he slammed into the Dycks' van.
Castillo's blood alcohol level was .199 percent an hour after the wreck.
The legal limit in Texas is .08 percent.
Jarrell is 37 miles north of Austin and 13 miles north of Georgetown.
Castillo is the fifth person to be tried in Texas on murder charges for a fatal alcohol-related wreck.
