(September 16, 2008)—Relief efforts in the wake of Hurricane Ike are focused on the Texas Gulf Coast, but thousands of Central Texas residents are also living without electricity or water in the aftermath of the storm, which still packed a punch as it pushed through eastern counties in the region Saturday.
In Milam County, schools remained closed Tuesday in the Gause ISD and unless power is restored, classes won’t be held on Wednesday, either.
In Leon County, schools are closed in the Normangee and boil orders are in effect for customers of the Flo Water System and St. Paul’s Water System as well as for residents of Normangee.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency has set up an ice and water distribution center in Centerville and volunteer firefighters are hauling some supplies to Normangee.
Residents in need of fuel are asked to go to Grimes Exxon, intersection of Highway 39 Highway 3 in Normangee, where a generator is supplying power to the station so gas and diesel are available.
Hardest hit is Robertson County, where the only grocery store that’s open in the county is in Hearne.
The Franklin ISD donated food in order to provide residents of Calvert a hot meal at 5 p.m. Tuesday at W. D. Spinger Elementary School.
Ice and water are available at the Calvert Fire Station at the Pridgeon Center in Franklin and at Bremond High School.
Schools in Franklin, Mumford, Bremond and Calvert are all closed.
