(September 26, 2008)—A chlorine leak in a water treatment facility on Sanger Avenue near Crestview Elementary School in Waco sent three firefighters to a local hospital Friday morning.
The leak was reported around 7:45 a.m. Friday at the plant between North Valley Mills Drive and New Road.
Administrators at both Crestview and Texas Christian Academy, both of which are near the intersection of Sanger and New Road, were advised of the leak, but the schools were not evacuated.
Sanger was closed between North Valley Mills and New Road because of the leak.
Firefighters shut down water and chlorine valves in the facility to stop the leak and said the situation was under control just before 10:30 a.m.
The three firefighters taken to the hospital had inhaled caustic chlorine fumes.
The facility will remain closed for the time being, but that won’t affect water service to residents in the area.
The cause of the leak was unknown Friday morning, but officials suspect a valve was the culprit.
