(October 6, 2008)—First Cavalry Division Pfc. Willie James Wiley, Jr., who was scheduled to deploy to Iraq later this year, has died of injuries he received in a high-speed rollover, Fort Hood said Monday.

Wiley was a passenger in a car that hit a wall at a high rate of speed and rolled over Friday on U.S. Highway 190 near Nolanville, Fort Hood said.

The driver escaped with minor injuries and was in stable condition Monday at Scott & White Hospital in Temple, Fort Hood said.

Wiley joined the Army in May 2007 and was assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division’s 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team.

He was serving with the 1st Battalion., 12th Cavalry’s Rear Detachment while the battalion was in Iraq.

He had just returned from training at the National Training Center at Fort Irwin, Calif., Fort Hood said.

This situation is very unfortunate not only for the son and brother, but the driver who has to live with the fact he killed his friend by his mistakes. No one is perfect and alot of the younger generation tries to see what they can get away with until they come accross a life experiance that makes them think more about reactions. Another thing by targeting FT Hood in thier soldiers actions that make head lines, but also the number of deaths at war, how compare a post the size of a city with a smaller post's situation.Of course numbers are going to be greater. My father died in a car accident by a woman who slid on ice 27 years ago, and someone to this day visits his grave and leaves flowers. No one in my family has no idea who is doing it and we suspect it is that woman.

Must have been in a hurry to get back on post, if he was sober, he should have been driving, if this is alcohol related, which other reports have indicated. Growing up around the Fort Hood area my whole life, soldiers attitudes have changed. When they are in uniform, most are responsible soldiers, it is another story out of uniform. And this is not saying that this is bad, their attitude in uniform is totally different than when they are out of uniform. Keep in mind this usually on their personal time, however, they do tend to make wrong choices and think they are invincible. Unfortunately, in the past 3 months, the number for deaths among soldiers in the Fort Hood area has risen immensely, almost all are on their personal time, where bad choices have been made. I am sorry for your loss, however, we see it first hand. To me personally, anyone who drinks and drives, thinks they are invincible.

William, this is my brother that you are speaking about. He did not think he was a super person, he was a passenger that was killed by someone who was driving. Before you try to speak on something get the facts straight. He was an excellent solider on his way to deployment. I am pretty sure that he did not think he was invincibile. Put yourself in my shoes, how dare you speak like this as tragic as this accident is.

Everyday when I leave out of the main gate there is at least one idiot that tries to go as far as they can ebfore entering the long line entering 190. They cross double yellow lines, cut in front of vehicles, drive along the shoulder. How do you get it through their obviously thick skulls that there is NO place in Killeen that you need to drive like a maniac to get to. And no, its not just soldiers, but it IS 8 times out of 10.

Why do all these soldiers think that they are Super People, I have spent several tours in Iraq, Afghanistan and Bosnia, and I still respect the laws of nature and the public, speeding always has a bad ending, when you survive the war you should have a better knowledge of the dangers out there not that you survived them and can survive everything else. The Fort Hood command and the Army in total need to get this into their soldiers heads that they are not invincible. God bless this soldier's loved ones.
