(October 7, 2008)--Police are investigating an accident that killed a woman after her car was crushed between two trucks Tuesday afternoon in Temple.

The victim was identified as Edna Mayo, 71, of Temple.

Police said Mayo was driving a Mazda 626 south in the northbound lane of North General Bruce Drive when she entered the H K Dodgen Loop intersection and the car was T-boned by a flat bed truck carrying wooden pallets.

The force of the collision pushed the car onto the bridge that crosses over Interstate 35 where it was hit by an eastbound 18-wheeler.

The car ended up sandwiched between the two trucks.

Police said Mayo was killed instantly.

The driver of the flatbed truck had to be cut out with the Jaws of Life.

He was taken to Scott and White Hospital with non life-threatening injuries to his legs.

The driver of the 18-wheeler was not injured.

The Temple Haz-Mat team was on scene because one of the trucks leaked a small amount of fuel onto the road.

The Temple Police Department’s Traffic Investigation Unit is performing a reconstruction investigation that will determine whether speed, alcohol or other factors may have contributed to the accident.

Mother of three: Re-read my post why don't you. I was saying that traffic that is ON the loop has to stop (they have the right of way) to avoid being hit by trucks coming OUT OF THE SERVICE STATIONS, and PULLING OUT FROM THE STOP SIGNS on the access roads. I also stated that the lady was at fault for this accident. I wasn't blaming a truck driver for that. I was commenting on the traffic situation in that area in general. OH, and if I am coming down the street and a truck pulls out in front of me, does that mean I am in his way???

My husband drives a truck for a living and I was wondering how long it would take for someone to blame the big truck. There are signs on the stop signs that say "Cross Traffic Does Not Stop" so people should be paying more attention before they pull out. I do believe the speed limit should be drastically reduced on the Loop at that point because it's a VERY busy intersection. But as for the trucks making people come to a complete stop??? What are you talking about?? There is a turn lane to turn into the gas stations on the Loop and it goes to two lanes at the exit of the station. On the other side of the Shell they have the right of way because it's a one way. According to law a Semi can make you back up at an intersection if they can't make the turn because you're in the way. There are good drivers and there are AWFUL drivers. But this was the woman's fault, sadly enough, and it's tragic that she lost her life. Please don't blame the trucks for something they had nothing to do with.

I agree with JB. In this accident, the lady made a mistake. but this is a very dangerous spot. The semi trucks pull out of the service stations and off the access roads completly aware that they are making people coming down loop 363 come to a complete stop. But I guess they figure they are so big they are not going to get hurt if we hit them. There are accidents at that spot pretty frequently, and I am really suprised that there aren't any more. The only reason for that, I believe is that people coming down the loop give up their right of way to avoid getting hit.Temple really needs to do something about this.

I saw this accident shortly after it happened, it was bad. It appeared to me that she was going the wrong way up the northbound access road and went to turn west at the 304 exit bridge , and with no stop sign in her direction, pulled right out in front of these big trucks. I have to hit my brakes or stop on that bridge all the time as it is, people seem to think that the cross traffic stops when it does NOT, hopefully they'll make some changes at this intersection. I agree with other posts about having to retake a drivers education course when you are a certain age, not so that we don't have old people driving, but to better protect themselves and others on the road.

Well, I have an open mind to these accidents. Construction Areas are a 'Hazard' (Period)!!! Young Drivers as well as older Drivers are a Hazard!! Everybody is in such a hurry(!), which also creates more Hazards!! 'Everybody' needs to learn the 'Golden-Rule'!! Slow down and live!!! Back-To-The-Future!! PS. And 'stay off' of the cell phones!!!!!!!!

Some young people don't need to drive either,Bad eye sight, drugs and alcohol in their system or them just being messed up in the head from taking all kinds of dope.Older people are at the least off of the streets at certain time, some of the younger people are always on the road doing their dumb stuff with no where to go ,but to look for more dope.

I agree with the previous comment regarding mandatory testing, but not just for the elderly...for EVERYONE. It is ludicrous to think that you obtain a driver's license at a very young age and NEVER are re-tested! With so many "bad drivers" on the roadways, re-testing every 10 years at the least is more than reasonable. This may help lower the loss of life. Of course, a person failing their "re-test" may choose to drive without a license, but stiff penalties (jail time)would curb this.

I do agree with you to a point. I guess when they take there tests and they pass they have to give them there license's. My mom's friend is 94 still drives to the mall to walk everyday.....hahahah. Heck I never go down town and last night went dowtown about 7:00 turned the wrong way started going until I saw the cars coming towards me!!!!!And don't you know NONE of them slowed down they were just to happy to try and hit me and the kids. No one stopped I just had to turn to the right real quick onto the railroad tracks and they sped on by. Did not mean to do that and I am only 40 years old.

I know it's something that a lot of people have issues with and don't want to face, but seriously...some of these older people need to not be driving...bad eyesight, prescription meds, dementia...there needs to mandatory driving tests past a certain age or Drs need to step up and say this person should not be driving - these people are a danger to themselves and others. They can cry "we deserve respect" but I'd rather protect them and others...
