Police Department Changes On Hewitt's Ballot Save Email Print

A | A | A

(October 10, 2008) - Hewitt residents will be voting not just on the Presidential election in November.

They will also decide on a proposal to put the city's police department under the Texas Civil Service System.

The civil service system can only be enforced in cities with a population of 10,000 or more, cities that have a paid police or fire department, and voters in that city must have approved the system.

If Texas' Civil Service System passes, a written standardized test along with a physical agility test will be used in place of interviews to hire police officers and to promote officers in the department.

Also, the city's officers would be paid according to a pay scale monitored by the state of Texas.

If voters say yes to the proposal, it would mean more administrative costs to get the system running in Hewitt.

The Hewitt Police Association proposed the civil service system to the city council in June 2008.

The city council then agreed to put the proposal on the November ballot.

This is such a critical issue for the police. You need to have all the facts before making a report and in this case you did not. I would like to say thank you to the police in Hewitt for all your hard work, you do a great job. Just look at the crime rate compaired to others around us. Thank you all and you have my vote

Your story on civil service was filled with inaccurate information. To top it off you included a link taht titled City of Hewitt Police Department Proposal. That document is not the police departments proposal. the document was produced by the city and the interim city manager. The facts in the document are also inaccurate. It was produced because the city leaders do nto want civil service and be held accountable for thier actions against employees or follow any type of guidelines in regards to hiring and promotions. In the future i would suggest that i news agency such as yourself do a lot more fact checking and background before producing a story. Whomever approved this story should be trained in proper reproting

The civil service story was not correct. The city council didn't agree to put the civil service election on the ballot. They had to because the police officers gathered a petition from the citizens of Hewitt to have it put on the ballot. Also civil service will not give a pay raise to the officers, only a little more job security. Also civil service does not do away with interviews. You don't get hired just because you pass a test. You still have an interview process. I am the public information officer for the Hewitt Police Association and I wish if news 10 was going to do a story I wish they would have done a fair story such as the one news 6 did. Any citizen wanting information can contact me for the correct info.

Your story is not correct. I am the President of the Hewitt Police Association. I think you sent the wrong message to the public and it should be corrected. Before you report, please have all the facts correct.

The City of Hewitt and the leaders of the police department do not want civil service because it takes away the city's authority to do whatever they choose without following any type of guidelines. The leaders of the city, especially the past city officials, have run the city as if it were their own little dictatorship. Do as is I say not as dictated by law is the norm for the City of Hewitt. I will also so taht I am surprised that you did not check the facts for your story. I noticed a link to the City of Hewitt's fact sheet. That fact sheet is completely inaccurate and it casts a dim shadow on civil service process. Your reporter should be admonished for such shoddy reporting. Shame. Shame. Shame.

Its funny how the story made mention of how much it will cost. There have been several storie about civil service raising taxes. I find that funny since the City of Hewitt and the city council have raised taxes. Take a look a the city council agenda over the past six months and you will see several meetings in regards to raising taxes. Didithat have to do with civil service?? No. Your reporting is inaccurate. For years the City of Hewitt has been run by individuals that no interest other than their own. I suggest you do a story on the previous city manager and his "real" compensation and the actions of the city since his retirment. I think you will find that to be a very interesting story.

You butchered the story on civil service. You did your viewers an injustice. Civil Service was adopted for fair enforcement of law. Currently Hewitt officers are at will employees. Lets say the Mayor or someone of power is involved in criminal activety.....currently an Officer in Hewitt could be fired if he began to investigate the crime. However under civil service the officer is protected to enforce law up and down his chain of command. Civil Service was designed to keep City leaders held to the same standards as its citizens? If you get caught driving while intoxicated you will go to jail. Should not your city leaders be held to the same standards? If they dont want civil service you better be asking why? Its not money... who has what to hide?Officers want to work for civil service Depts. It is a great recruiting tool. It also keeps criminals from getting a badge by standards. You need to interview the Waco Police Association they can give you great insight on this story....
