LOCKNEY, Texas (January 13, 2009)—A teenage was in custody and facing a felony arson charge Tuesday in connection with the fire that destroyed a West Texas school.

The 15-year-old girl, who’s a student at the school, surrendered to authorities late Monday, Floyd County Chief Deputy Daniel Spain said.

She remained in custody at the Garza County Juvenile Detention Center on Tuesday, he said.

Floyd County Sheriff Paul Raissez said the girl told investigators she set the fire at Lockney High School thinking it might bring updated equipment and classrooms.

The sheriff said he doesn't think the girl "knew how rapidly it would turn bad."

No one was hurt in the fire Sunday night when the building was unoccupied.

The fire also damaged part of the adjacent junior high school.

Spain said a second teenager also surrendered Monday night.

She faces an arson charge for allegedly setting fires in garbage cans near the school and was not involved in the school fire.

Lockney is a town of about 1,800, located 60 miles northeast of Lubbock.

as you say. the girls heart was in the right place? no it was not. i go to school at the junior high in lockney myself. and this girl did not want new schhool things. she was mad at a teacher. that was just her excuse to possibly not get as bad of charges. this was a horrible thing. and we are now in a church going to school.

you guys are all saying the same thing where were her parents? Where was her school pride? blah blah blah. it explains in the article that she thought if she were to burn the old equipment, her school would get new stuff...apparently her heart was in the right place, she just went about it the wrong way... i still think she needs to be punished to the fullest extent. but dont blame the parents, because obviously they taught her if something is wrong than fix it...and dont blame her pride...because she had enough school pride to put herself in trouble to get results...i'd blame the school board for not equipping the students with supplies that are usable.
