HOUSTON (March 30, 2009)--Eleven people, including nine firefighters, were taken to Houston hospitals Monday after a traffic accident in which two fire trucks responding to a call collided.

Houston District Fire Chief Tommy Dowdy said the two fire trucks were responding Monday to a report of an apartment fire when they collided at an intersection.

One truck rolled over onto a vehicle that was passing through the intersection.

Dowdy says one of the firefighters, who was thrown from the fire truck, and a person on a bicycle who was hit by one of the trucks suffered severe injuries.

The driver of the vehicle was also injured.

Fire department officials later determined the reported apartment fire was a false alarm.

The cause of the accident is still being investigated.

This is such a horrible story! My husband has been a FF/Paramedic for 13 years now. I pray for him every time he goes to work. I am dreading that one day when the FF Chief comes to my door. When people hear the sirens of a FF Truck Ambulance or Police Car, THEY NEED TO GET OUT OF THE WAY OR JUST STOP WHERE YOU ARE AT. When it comes to intersections it is better to be a DEFENSIVE DRIVER THAN AN OFFENSIVE DRIVER.

Folks, as a Police Officer, I see first hand how fast emergency vehicles sometimes "blow" through an intersection. Those lights and sirens are only so effective. When it comes to intersections, you should slow down enough to be able to stop if needed. At this incident, it was obvious that both operators were not in control. You can't let your emotions overrun your safety. Remember, if you don't make it to the scene, you're worthless... Hope all folks recover.

To the fire truck that comes out at Valley Mills and Speight that has a 5 on it. The way those guys drive they are going to be next. They drive like a bunch of idiots. The driver doesn't even slow down at intersections where there are stop signs or red lights. Just because you have flashing lights and a siren doesn't mean you have the right to drive that way.
