LEON COUNTY (April 14, 2009)—Residents of northeastern Leon County have ambulance service again, but only for the next 25 days.

Bryan-College Station-based Legacy EMS agreed Tuesday to provide temporary service to the area, which includes Buffalo, Oakwood and Flo.

The area lost service on April 7 because of the lack of a subsidy.

Voters in that area of Leon County will vote for a third time in May on whether to establish an emergency services district to generate funds to support service.

Voters have twice rejected similar measures.

“What we’re trying to do is provide interim care for the commonwealth of this area, expecting no tax subsidy and no contract,” said Legacy EMS President/CEO Kevin Carnes.

The temporary service will be available until May 10, although Legacy agreed to stay on during a transitional period should the emergency services district proposal pass.

“This is a band aid to a gaping wound,” Carnes said.

“It’s a handshake arrangement that will be there until other measures are taken.”
