(October 29, 2006)--A freeway underpass in Houston where a mother and her daughter died in flooding earlier this month will soon have markers for water depth.

The underpass didn't have any markers when Patricia Gutierrez and her 16-year-old daughter, Melissa Rojas, tried to drive through it during a rainstorm two weeks ago.

Both drowned in a sport utility vehicle that was eventually submerged in about 10 feet of water.

Another underpass nearby also will be marked, a Texas Department of Transportation official said.

Stuart Corder made the announcement Saturday during a meeting to address ways to prevent underpass flooding and warn drivers of dangerous conditions.

The state transportation department is also considering a system of flashing lights and signs for flood-prone areas.

The lights and signs would activate when water reaches a dangerous level.
