REDLAND (July 9, 2009)--A motel fire in January just north of Lufkin has been ruled arson.

So far no arrests have been made in the fire that gutted at least 16 rooms of the American Motel near Redland.

One volunteer firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation.

The Lufkin Daily News reported Thursday that the State Fire Marshal's Office determined the blaze was started in a bathroom.

Motel owner Norma Berreles says she found suspicious items in the room, including lighter fluid, and doesn't know "if they were making drugs in there, or if something exploded."

She and her husband have been working to repair the damage and plan to reopen the main building in late August.

A back portion of the motel already has 12 rooms available for rent.
