HILLISTER (July 9, 2009)--Deputies and animal welfare workers rescued dozens of horses and dogs Thursday from an East Texas farm where a sheriff’s deputy killed a man June 1.
The rescues Thursday were a farm near Hillister, about 85 miles northeast of Houston.
Tyler County Sheriff David Hennigan told KFDM-TV of Beaumont that deputies and the SPCA from Houston seized about 30 horses, 16 dogs, six puppies and two birds.
A hearing on the seizure is scheduled for July 20 in Woodville.
Hennigan says the June 1 incident happened when an armed man threatened a deputy who was responding to a report of a domestic disturbance.
The deputy shot the man to death.
