State Douses Mulch Fire To Reduce Air Pollution
The state has set aside an agreement not to use water on a massive Hill Country mulch fire in order to douse the flames to reduce air pollution.

(March 11, 2007)--State environmental officials have doused a massive mulch fire burning northwest of San Antonio with water in order to reduce air pollution.
That move breaks an agreement with city water officials.
For the third time, officials from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality set aside an agreement to avoid using water to try and put out the flames in Helotes.
San Antonio Water System officials had been alarmed by water from the site leaching into the groundwater.
But air pollution levels exceeded safety levels for children and the elderly in 23 of 25 days recently measured, prompting the move.
An official with the environmental commission says that since the air was not improving, they were not operating under terms of the agreement.
Since Christmas, the fire has been consuming a 70-foot-high pile of tree stumps and branches.
