DALHART (October 16, 2009)--A Dalhart man who’s suspected of shooting his wife to death while two of the couple’s grandchildren watched remained at large Friday as police investigate whether he fled to Mexico.

Dalhart Police Chief Tom Sanford told The Associated Press Friday that the search continues for Jose Abel Cancino, 78, who’s who is named in a murder warrant in connection with the killing.

Elva Perez Cancino, 63, was gunned down Wednesday night outside the couple's home after asking her spouse to move out, Sanford said.

Sanford said police are "talking with family members to see where he might be hiding out, and the possibility of him heading to old Mexico."

Police say the Cancino has family in the Del Rio and Midland area, as well as Mexico.

Dalhart is a Texas Panhandle town of about 7,300 residents, near the Oklahoma and New Mexico borders.
