LORENA (December 8, 2009)--A four-vehicle wreck on Interstate 35 Tuesday morning that brought traffic to a standstill in both directions claimed the life of a 9-year-old Missouri girl.
McLennan County Justice of the Peace Billy Martin pronounced Isabelle Ochoa of Sedalia, Mo. dead at 10:50 a.m. at Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center in Waco.
Martin said the girl was traveling with her mother in a Pontiac Aztec southbound on the interstate when the crash occurred.
A physician who drove up on the accident helped as first responders administered first aid to the injured girl, Department of Public Safety troopers said.
Three other people were also taken to hospitals after the chain-reaction crash, which happened just after 10 a.m. at the 322 mile marker on the interstate in Lorena.
Reports indicate that a minivan towed by the Aztec worked loose of the hitch to which it was secured and rolled onto the highway.
The driver of an 18-wheeler that was following the Pontiac attempted to avoid the minivan, swerving into the median ditch where the rig struck a large concrete barrier that was pushed at least two feet into the northbound lane.
The driver of a northbound 18-wheeler attempted to avoid the displaced barrier, but lost control of the rig, which jackknifed and overturned.
Rescuers had to cut at least one person from the wreckage.
The dead girl was riding in the Aztec, police said.
Mirelia Meza, 37, and Ruby Meza, 7, both of Sedalia, Mo., were also riding in the Aztec.
They both were injured.
The driver of the southbound 18-wheeler that struck the median barrier, Ron Mudge of Grovespring, Mo. was also injured, police said.
Mudge and Mirelia Meza were treated and later released.
Ruby Meza remained in the hospital Tuesday evening. Her condition was not available.
The driver of the northbound 18-wheeler, Johnathan Marturano, 28, was not injured, police said.
Fire department units from Lorena were first on the scene.
They called the Hewitt Fire Department for assistance.
Lorena police and DPS barricaded the area while authorities investigate.
All lanes of the highway were open again to traffic by 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Its not only disturbing but annoying to see how some people speak their mind freely withouot caring about the hurtful things they say to our family it has nothing to do with anything the fact were mexicans?ok everyone makes mistakes and nothing i say is gunna bring that happy little girl back so all i can do now is pray for her and keep her in my heart ily isabel rip mamas.
It doesn't matter whose fault it was or what led up to the event, it is a tragic event. Only thing to do now is pray for the ones involved and pray for the family who lost one it's members that day. No one has the right to pass judgement except for one and I don't think he uses comment boards to get his point across. My deepest sympathies go to the family of the little girl and everyone involved in the accident. This is a time for reflection, not blame. God bless and stay strong.
No one pointed out that the Pontiac Aztek has a 'k' on the end, not a 'c'. The Aztek like any other SUV has a high center of gravity and is not considered a towing vehicle especially at highway speeds. Furthermore this vehicle does not have a strong transmission and would abusive to tow anything heavier than a small trailer/payload. - As for the van coming loose, it is federal and state law to use safety chains to prevent the tow from coming lose.
