(December 27, 2009)—The combination of the cold polar air mass that remains entrenched over the region with a storm system that’s expected to approach Tuesday could produce more snow.

A mixture of rain and snow is expected to fall mainly north of a line from Lampasas to Waco to Athens through midday Tuesday and by Tuesday evening forecasters say the precipitation will probably turn to snow north of a line from Comanche to Waxahachie to Emory.

Accumulations of as much as 2 inches are possible in some areas, particularly west of Interstate 35, forecasters said Sunday.

Cold rain is likely along and southeast of a line from Temple to Palestine, but the forecast is fluid because of uncertainties about the availability of moisture and the strength of the storm system, forecasters said.

Monday should be mostly sunny with highs in the 40s, but clouds move in Monday night as temperatures drop into the lower 30s.

Rain and snow are possible Tuesday morning and more likely Tuesday afternoon.

A chance of precipitation remains in the forecast through Wednesday morning.

Wednesday should be warmer, with highs in the lower 50s.

At this point, the New Year’s Day forecast calls for lows in the lower 30s and highs in the lower 50s under a partly cloudy sky.

This time of year though the forecast changes every hour. By this evening it will have changed at least 5 times. Anyway, for now it is supposed to be above freezing.
