(June 24, 2007)--Representative John Culberson wants $10 million for nanotechnology projects.
Representative Sam Johnson is seeking $4 million for a National Virtual Vietnam Archive at Texas Tech University.
Members of the Texas congressional delegation had already requested billions of dollars for university research, roads, water projects, museums, social and criminal justice programs and more.
Democrats were reluctant to share their wish lists with the public.
Many Texas Democrats said they don't want to publicize what they're seeking if it's not going to get funded.
Most Republicans in the state delegation shared their lists, but a few also were also reluctant.
Though earmarks have long been part of the budget process and make up a small part of national spending, they grew exponentially in the mid 1990s.
In 1994, when Democrats last had control of the appropriations process, there were 4,000 earmarks.
That dropped to 3,000 in the first year of Republican majority, but then more than quintupled over the next 10 years.
