(July 20, 2007)--The most powerful rocket ever built was no match for Houston's stifling humidity.
Now the massive Saturn Five rocket has been repaired and formally goes back on exhibit Friday at Johnson Space Center.
The horizontally displayed rocket would reach 30 stories if stood upright.
The decay led to a restoration project that will culminate in a grand reopening, 38 years to the day since men first walked on the moon.
The rocket, which is already open to visitors, will be protected inside a climate-controlled, barn-like building near the entrance to the space center.
Funding for the $5 million restoration project began in 1999, 22 years after the rocket was first displayed.
This Saturn Five, one of only three such rockets in existence, never launched because its Apollo 18 mission was canceled.
