Class Teaches Students How To Live As Monks

PHILADELPHIA (February 11, 2012)—Professor Justin McDaniel's religious studies class on monastic life and asceticism gives students at the University of Pennsylvania a firsthand experience of what it's like to be a monk.

At various times during the semester, students forego technology, coffee, physical human contact and certain foods and have to wake up at 5 a.m. without the assistance of an alarm clock.

Those are just a sample of McDaniel's restrictions in an effort to help students become more observant, aware and disciplined.

Sophomore Madelyn Keyser of Castro Valley, Calif., said that while there are no tests or papers, the class is difficult because it's based on integrity and participation.

She said she hopes it will help her become a better listener.
