Killeen: KISD Plans For Growth

KILLEEN (February 3, 2012) ---The Killeen ISD opened its 32nd elementary school this year, and already plans for the 33rd are in the works.

"The plans for the 33rd elementary school are in the works but haven't been approved yet. Its all part of our strategic facilities plan," KISD spokeswoman Leslie Gilmore said.

KISD currently has eleven middle schools and four high schools.

Gilmore says the district will begin looking at the need for more middle schools in the future, as the elementary-age students get older.

The KISD Career Center will open in Fall 2012 and officials say close to 1000 high school students can attend class there.

It’s a move that officials hope will cut down on the need for space at the high school level.

Since late last year almost 20,000 troops have returned home to Fort Hood from overseas.

School officials say the growing military community plays a part in the growing number of young students a reason for the close relationship between KISD and Fort Hood.
