Whitney Houston To Be Honored At Grammys

LOS ANGELES (February 12, 2012)--Jennifer Hudson will pay tribute to her idol, Whitney Houston, at Sunday night’s Grammy Awards.

Houston died Saturday at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

The cause of death has not yet been determined.

Show organizer Ken Ehrlich said Hudson will be featured in a "musical tribute."

He said it's too fresh to do more at this time, but said the Grammy-winner's amazing accomplishments had to be noted.

Prior to the news of Houston's death, Hudson attended a pre-Grammy event Saturday where she discussed the impact Houston had on her career.

Hudson talked about her love for Houston's hit "I Will Always Love You" and said that she would "create duets with her because I wanted to sing with Whitney Houston."

Houston presented Hudson with her first Grammy.

Hudson said meeting her idol "almost overshadowed getting the Grammy."

Houston’s body was taken to the Los Angeles County morgue for an autopsy.

Houston, 48, died alone in her hotel room on the fourth floor of the Beverly Hilton hotel.

She was pronounced dead just before 4 p.m. PST Saturday.

Houston was scheduled to appear at a pre-Grammy concert and dinner hosted by Clive Davis, the music producer who discovered her.

The daughter of singer Cissy Houston, Whitney was born on August 9, 1963 in Newark, New Jersey.

She first started singing in church, and later sung backup vocals for such artists as Chaka Khan and Jermaine Jackson.

Houston’s self-titled debut album sold millions of copies, and the song “Saving all my Love for You” won Houston her first Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal.

She went on to become one of the top-selling artists in pop music history, selling more than 55 million albums in the United States alone.

She carried her music success onto the big screen, appearing in such movies as “The Bodyguard” which featured her hit re-make, “I Will Always Love You.”

Those who knew her expressed shock and sadness at news of her death.

Mariah Carey tweeted she was heartbroken and in tears.

"She will never be forgotten as one of the greatest voices to ever grace the earth,” Carey said.

Singer and songwriter Barry Manilow said he can't believe that Whitney is gone.

He said his heart goes out to her family, to Clive Davis, and to everyone who knew and loved the "amazingly talented and beautiful artist."

"I will always love her,” he added.

Motown great Smokey Robinson said he had known Whitney since she was a little girl and loved her.

"She was like family to me. I will miss her,” he said.

Neil Portnow, president and CEO of the Recording Academy, said, "A light has been dimmed in our music community today, and we extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends, fans and all who have been touched by her beautiful voice."

Despite the death, the pre-Grammy event at which she was to have appeared, went on as planned.

Stars including Dr. Dre, Adam Lambert, Serena Williams and Kim Kardashian were in attendance.

India.Arie said Houston "set the standard for what it is to be a great female artist."

Producer Jimmy Jam said her death was a "bittersweet irony" given that Davis introduced Houston to the world at the event more than two decades ago.

Jam said it "may be appropriate we're saying our first goodbyes to Whitney at a Clive Davis event."
