School Closings Could Impact Home Values

WACO (February 11, 2012) -- Between discussion of school closures in the Waco ISD and now with the release of Superintendent Dr. Bonny Cain's recommended closure and consolidation list, the Waco housing market is at a stand still.

The talk of school closures has not slowed the sale of homes in the district.

However, one Woodway homeowner, whose home is in the area of Viking Hills Elementary School says he believes the closure of the school will drop the value of his home by as much as 30%.

School Board President Pat Atkins understands the homeowners’ concerns; his wife has taught at Viking Hills for a decade and his children have gone to school there as well.

As for what the future holds real estate agent Donna Terrase says, "I think it is going to have a strange impact, because the values are going to go up in homes that normally wouldn't have gone up, and a drop in home prices that we would not have expected in the past."

The Waco ISD School Board will meet again on Feb. 14 and will take a final vote on school closures on Feb. 23.
