Suspected Drug Traffickers Killed In Shootout Near Texas Border

MEXICO CITY (January 23, 2011)—Ten suspected drug gang gunmen were killed in a shootout with soldiers in the town of El Moquetito in Tamaulipas State just across the Texas border, Mexican authorities said.

Mexico’s Defense Department says a military patrol came upon a camp of armed men in the town on Friday, and they began shooting.

It says the soldiers returned fire and killed 10 suspects.

A Defense statement says authorities seized weapons including 24 rifles, two grenade launchers and 18 grenades, as well as an armed vehicle.

The Gulf coast state of Tamaulipas borders southeastern Texas.
