Texas Police Officer Shot After Responding To Domestic Disturbance

LUBBOCK (February 13, 2012)--A Muleshoe police officer who was shot after responding to a domestic disturbance call has been released from the hospital.

Muleshoe Police Chief Brian Frieda said Sgt. Steve Bartley, 35, was shot once in the side Friday.

His bulletproof vest stopped a second shot to his chest, Frieda said.

The chief said Bartley was released from a Lubbock hospital on Saturday afternoon.

Frieda says Bartley returned fire on the man who shot him, hitting the man several times.

The man was taken to Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock, where the chief says he’s in critical but stable condition.

Frieda, who said the investigation has been turned over to the Texas Rangers and the district attorney's office, said he could not comment further.
