Waco: Longtime Cooper Foundation Director To Retire

WACO (February 13, 2012)—Elizabeth Smith, the longtime executive director of Waco’s charitable Cooper Foundation, plans to retire this summer, William L. Clifton, Jr., chairman of the Cooper Trustees, announced Monday.

Clifton said the trustees have already begun a search for a successor.

Smith succeeded Jerry Cartwright in 1994 to become the third director of the foundation, which was established in 1943 and has awarded about $23 million to local nonprofits.

During Smith’s tenure, the foundation provided early support for such projects as the Waco Mammoth Site, and the Baylor Research and Innovation Collaborative or BRIC.

"Elizabeth wants to be sure the Cooper Foundation serves all of the community, and she reaches out to make that happen," Clifton said.
