WASHINGTON (May 31, 2011)--President Barack Obama will award the Medal of Honor to Army Sgt. 1st Class Leroy Arthur Petry, 31, of Santa Fe N.M. for courage on the battlefield in Afghanistan.
The White House said Tuesday Petry will receive the nation's highest military decoration in a ceremony on July 12 for courageous actions during combat operations against an armed enemy in May 2008 the eastern Afghan province of Paktia.
Petry, who, is currently assigned to the 75th Ranger Regiment, lost his right hand and suffered other wounds after he threw a live grenade away from other soldiers.
At the time, Petry was serving with Company A, 2nd Bn., 75th Ranger Regiment from Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash
The White House said Petry will be the second living, active-duty service member to receive a Medal of Honor for actions in the Iraq or Afghanistan wars.
Last year, Mr. Obama awarded a Medal of honor to Staff Sgt. Sal Giunta, also for actions in Afghanistan.
