KIEV, Ukraine (January 30, 2012)--While much of the United States enjoys an unusually mild winter, more than 30 people have died across Eastern Europe as a result of heavy snow and a severe cold snap.
With temperatures below zero, authorities are opening emergency shelters in some areas.
Officials in Ukraine say 18 people have died of hypothermia in recent days.
The Emergency Situations Ministry also said on its website Monday that nearly 500 people sought medical help for frostbites and hypothermia in just three days last week.
