Doctors Urged To Talk To Patients About Sex After Heart Attacks

CHICAGO (July 29, 2013)--New guidance released Monday says cardiologists should talk about sex with their patients to let them know intimacy is often possible after a heart attack.

The advice is in a consensus statement the American Heart Association and European Society of Cardiology released on Monday that says doctors should bring up the topic early and often, to let survivors know sex is often OK after a heart attack, stroke or other cardiac condition.

The heart groups address everything from when and how to resume sex, to what position might be best for some conditions or not advised for others.

It's billed as the first scientific statement with detailed guidance on resuming sex after a heart problem and is based on a review of medical literature.
