COLUMBUS, Ohio (August 31, 2013)--An Ohio family is speaking out about a botched kidney transplant in which a nurse discarded a kidney that a man donated just before it was to have been given to his sister.
Sarah Fudacz of Toledo, Ohio was to have received her brother's kidney last August at the University of Toledo Medical Center, but the transplant wasn’t performed because a nurse accidentally discarded the donated organ.
Her brother, Paul, told The Blade of Toledo he was thrilled to donate his kidney, but felt disrespected after undergoing surgery for nothing.
The pair's parents say they thought Sarah was dead for about 20 minutes because they were told she was out of surgery before her brother.
The family is suing the hospital, which denies allegations of medical negligence.
The woman later received a kidney from a different donor.
