Health Officials Ask Senior Citizens To Think About HIV, AIDS

WASHINGTON (October 17, 2012)—Health officials are asking senior citizens to think about HIV and AIDS in the nation’s capital, which has one of the highest HIV infection rates in the country, and about one in five newly diagnosed cases in the city involves a person 50 or older.

Officials say older people are often diagnosed later and sicker because they don't think they're at risk.

Now health officials plan to spend $150,000 a year over at least the next two years reaching out to seniors, but talking to the baby boom generation about HIV and AIDS is different from talking to adolescents, and officials have developed a program specifically geared for older adults.
