Insurers Target Glut Of New Diabetes Patients

MIAMI (April 13, 2014) As hundreds of thousands of diabetics begin to use health coverage obtained under the Affordable Care Act, insurance companies are aggressively targeting this glut of new patients because they’re expensive to treat and often lax about taking medications and following their diets.

Insurers are calling diabetics when they don't pick up prescriptions or miss appointments, arranging transportation to get them to the doctor's office, and some are even sending nurses on house calls.

It's all part of an effort to avoid costly complications that will have a big impact on the insurance companies' bottom lines.

The Affordable Care Act no longer allows insurance companies to refuse those with pre-existing conditions, making early intervention even more critical if insurers want to rein in costs.
