Second Case Of Fungal Meningitis Confirmed In Texas

(November 2, 2012)—A second case of fungal meningitis linked to steroid shots for back pain has been confirmed in Texas, federal health officials said Friday.

As of Friday, the meningitis outbreak had sickened 404 people in Texas and 18 other states, and 29 people have died, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday.

No deaths have occurred in Texas.

The outbreak is linked to a medication made by a specialty pharmacy in Massachusetts, which has been recalled.

Cases have also been confirmed in Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.
