Texas Offers Online Help In Fight Against Childhood Obesity

AUSTIN (December 20, 2012)--Texas has created a new website designed to help battle childhood obesity and identify areas of the state where youngsters are most at risk, Comptroller Susan Combs announced Thursday.

Combs says the site, ReshapingTexas.org, is a way to help focus on obesity costs, medical research and health initiatives.

A mapping feature uses fitness and body mass data collected by school districts and reported to the Texas Education Agency to help pinpoint at-risk areas.

ReshapingTexas.org also encourages users to offer success stories, Combs said.

The 2011 Legislature ordered the comptroller's office to set up a website to compile research information on childhood obesity and provide other assistance.

“Our goal is to provide a collaborative, interactive clearinghouse of news, data, research and success stories involving Texas’ fight to treat and prevent obesity,” she said.

“ReshapingTexas is part of our ongoing effort to give Texans the tools and information they need on the frontlines of this issue. We need people across the state to help tackle obesity head-on, in order to avoid future health and economic pitfalls.”
