ATLANTA (September 16, 2013)—Terrie Hall, the North Carolina woman who starred in a stark government ad campaign to get people to stop smoking died of cancer Monday at a hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C., federal health officials said.
She was 53.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention spent more than $100 million for two rounds of paid ads on TV, in magazines and other media this year and last, seeking to get smokers to quit.
A diseased former smoker whose voice box was removed years ago, Hall was featured prominently in the campaign.
The most popular spot showed the former high school cheerleader putting in false teeth and covering her stoma with a scarf.
It received more than 2.8 million views on YouTube.
"She was a public health hero," said the CDC's director, Dr. Tom Frieden.
