WACO (September 23, 2013)-Authorities were investigating Monday after an inventory of a car that was found abandoned on a rural road in Falls County turned up a body in the trunk.

The 1997 Lincoln Town Car belongs to Adrian Denise Thornton, 59, who’s been missing from Fort Worth since June 16, but at this point authorities don’t know whether the body in the trunk was hers.

Authorities were searching in the area last month after investigators got information that suggested Thornton may have been in Falls County and perhaps in Marlin.

A passerby spotted the car just after noon Sunday in a wooded area north of Highway 7 on County Road 414 near Chilton and called the Falls County Sheriff’s Office.

The Lincoln was towed to the Department of Public Safety Lab in Waco, where the body was found, wrapped in a blanket partially covered with other items.

McLennan County Justice of the Peace David Paryea said he was called at around 10:30 p.m. Sunday to the DPS aircraft hangar outside the headquarters building on Crest Drive in Lacy Lakeview after DPS investigators found the body.

Paryea said the body, believed to be that of a woman, was "in a state of extensive decomposition."

He ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of the woman’s death and to confirm her identity.

Authorities are investigating the death as a homicide.
