KILLEEN (October 7, 2013)—Daniel Alejandro Velarde, 29, remained in the Bell County Jail Monday, charged with assault family violence impeding breath/circulation.

He was arrested after a nearly four-hour standoff early Saturday at a home on Alan Kent Drive in Killeen.

A 3-year-old child who was with him was unharmed.

The standoff started after officers responded at around 3:45 a.m. Saturday to a call from a woman who reported that her fiancée had assaulted her during a dispute and then refused to give her the couple’s child, police said.

The woman was taken to Metroplex Hospital in Killeen with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Officers, meanwhile, were able to contact the man by phone.

At first he insisted he wasn’t in the home, but then later, after officers determined he was, he refused to come out and ended the call.

The Killeen Police Department’s SWAT Team was deployed and the man surrendered with the child after team members broke out a window in order to get a communication device to him, police said.

He was arrested at around 7:30 a.m. Saturday and was taken to the Killeen City Jail.

The child was released to the mother, police said.
