COPPERAS COVE (July 27, 2012)—A man whose body was found early Thursday lying on the tracks near a railroad crossing in Copperas Cove was identified Friday as Nicholas Paul Webb, 28, of Copperas Cove.

Webb was a Fort Hood specialist who deployed to Iraq from February 2009 to February 2010.

He had been assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division’s 1st Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team since June 2008.

Police responded just before 4:30 a.m. Thursday after a conductor on a Burlington Northern Santa Fe train reported that the train ran over a body on the tracks.

Officers found Webb's body lying beneath railcars between Main and 1st Streets.

It’s not clear, however, how or exactly when Webb died.

An autopsy was ordered.

Traffic was detoured at several crossings in the area because of the stopped train until around 8:30 a.m.
