WEST (October 2, 2012)—A Tuesday morning wreck involving five vehicles had traffic blocked in both directions on Interstate 35 north of West for several hours.

All lanes were reopened by 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The accident involved four truck tractor, semi-trailers and one car.

One of the truck drivers was flown from the scene to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center, in Waco, for treatment.

The other drivers were not injured.

Department of Public Safety troopers and rescue units from West Fire Department were sent just after 11 a.m. to mile marker 355 where the trucks had collided in the northbound lanes.

Rescuers asked for the Jaws of Life to help free one of the drivers from the wreckage.

A medical helicopter was sent to the scene to fly the injured driver to a Waco hospital.

Traffic was being diverted on the northbound side of the roadway at the 352 mile marker and on the southbound side at the 356 mile marker.

One DPS trooper at the scene said the highway likely would remain closed until around 2 p.m.

The extent of the drivers’ injuries was not immediately known and there was no detail on how the accident happened.
