BELTON (February 14, 2013)—A Bell County Grand Jury indicted an Arizona man Wednesday on a charge of injury to a child causing serious bodily injury.
Mitchell Daniel Bahe, 26, already was being held in the Bell County Jail on a $300,000 bond.
Bahe, who shows an address in Tsaile, Arizona, was booked into the jail on Dec. 1, 2012 in connection with an assault on a 4-month-old boy in 2007 but had escaped justice until his arrest last October 22 in New Mexico on the Bell County warrant.
On April 19, 2007, Killeen police responded to 4512 Loyd Dr. in response to a report that a 4-month-old child was not breathing.
Officers and paramedics found an infant who appeared to have a head injury.
The infant was taken to Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center and then was flown to Scott & White Hospital in Temple.
Police statements indicated that Bahe was at the scene with other individuals and was questioned, an arrest warrant affidavit says.
The affidavit says that Bahe told officers that while he was holding the infant, the baby fell to the floor.
He said he shook the infant and when he realized there was something wrong with the baby he went to get his girlfriend, the affidavit said.
According to the affidavit, a statement from the hospital was submitted that indicated the infant "suffered a severe traumatic brain injury secondary to a shaking injury."
The affidavit also said an officer spoke with the infant's mother almost three months after the incident and learned that the child was blind and would never be able to see.
