KILLEEN (June 14, 2013)—Stephan Lemar Hicks, 24, was being held Friday morning in the Killeen City Jail after he turned himself in Thursday when he learned a warrant for his arrest had been issued in connection with the accidental shooting of his 2-year-old daughter on May 31.
Hicks, a military policeman at Fort Hood, faces a charge of making a firearm accessible to a child, which is a misdemeanor.
Killeen police said at the time the child sustained serious injury from a gunshot wound after a loaded .40-caliber pistol was left within reach.
Smith said investigators are unsure whether the girl shot herself or was shot by her 3-year-old brother.
She remains at Scott & White’s McLane’s Children’s Hospital in Temple but is expected to recover, Killeen police spokeswoman Carroll Smith said.
Officers determined during investigation that Hicks would routinely leave his sidearm in a secure place at the family’s home on North 24th Street.
He told police on the day of the accident he failed to secure the weapon.
