GEORGETOWN (November 21, 2013) Fred Yazdi, 49, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the shooting death of an intoxicated man who ran to his house after a car accident in 2012.
A jury found Yazdi guilty in October in the death of Enrique Recio, 23.
Recio, whose blood alcohol level was twice the legal limit, banged on Recio’s door before dawn on Feb. 3, 2012, as he fled after the accident to avoid being charged with DWI.
The defense says Yazdi thought he was a burglar.
Prosecutors say Recio was shot three times, once while climbing an iron fence and then twice after falling to the ground.
Judge Bert Richardson told Yazdi that he could have stayed in his house, fired just a warning shot and waited for police who were on their way.
