HEARNE (January 2, 2013)—Hearne police Officer Stephen Stem was on paid administrative leave Wednesday pending the outcome of an internal investigation into a shooting in which he was involved that left a mentally challenged man dead, KBTX-TV in Bryan reported.
Hearne police responded to a call of shots fired at around 2:30 a.m. Sunday in the 800 block of South Riley after a caller reported that someone was shooting a gun from a white vehicle in the Columbus Village Apartments parking lot.
Officers arrived and found the vehicle.
An officer-involved shooting occurred in which a man was shot and killed and a gun that did not belong to police was recovered at the scene, Hearne police said in a statement that provided no additional detail.
Family members identified the victim as Tederalle Satchell, 28, who they say was mentally challenged.
"Next thing I know my sister ran into my bedroom screaming that he had been shot and killed," Yulanda Nelson, the shooting victim's aunt, told KBTX.
Family members do not believe Satchell owned a gun.
Texas Rangers and Department of Public Safety are assisting Hearne Police with the investigation.
