WACO (January 28, 2013)—About 600 crosses set up at pro-life memorial park in North Waco were mowed down sometime over the weekend and police are looking for suspects after what the park’s founder called the “most devastating” act of vandalism in the memorial’s 12-year history.
An employee of a nearby business reported the vandalism Saturday morning at Rachel’s Memorial Park at 4720 North 19th St. in Waco, where 4,000 crosses were erected in 2000, representing the number of abortions performed each day.
The vandal who drove through the park damaged a picket fence and cut a swath of damage 12-and-a-half feet wide and 136 feet, the park’s founder, the Rev. Rusty Lee Thomas said Monday.
The damaged area was littered not only with the rebar-reinforced crosses that were mowed down, but also oil, two tires and parts of the underside of the vehicle, Thomas said.
The park’s central Tomb of the Unknown Baby was not damaged, Thomas said.
“It appears the animosity against the preborn knows no bounds,” Thomas said Monday.
“Not only are we content as a nation to stand back and allow the preborn to die through the sin and crime of abortion, but now there are those among us who seek to destroy the very memory of these children as well,” he said.
In February 2008, police investigated a similar incident in which 200 to 300 crosses were destroyed.
Investigators are asking anyone with information to call the Waco Police Department (254) 750-7500 or Waco Crime Stoppers at (254) 753-4357.
