Dallas Mavericks Pay A Visit To West

WEST (June 15, 2013) -- Nearly two months after the explosion in West residents were given the chance to let loose and have fun.

The Dallas Mavericks and Texas Legends came to town and held basketball and dance clinics for the children of West.

Kids were taught basketball skills like ball handling and shooting by the coaching staff of the Texas Legends.

The Dallas Mavericks Dancers held a dance clinic for local girls and surprised the West High School cheerleaders by teaching them routines to take to cheer camp.

"I was just so surprised and so grateful that everyone's helping out. It's awesome that they came here," says West cheerleader Sarah Jares.

A Guns and Hoses basketball game was also hosted at the event.

The West Fire Department played against the West Police Officers.

Texas Legends Assistant GM Nancy Lieberman, coached the police officers while Mavericks Head Coach Rick Carlisle coached the firefighters.

"It's important to brings some fun to a very difficult situation and to let everybody know that things are going to be ok but it's going to take some time," says Coach Carlisle.

Residents of West say watching their kids have fun is a sigh of relief after everything they've been through.

"It's unbelievable to have the support that they've brought to us and to these kids. It's phenomenal for the kids," says Christi Rizo, a resident of West.

West Mayor Pro Tem, Steve Vanek says, so many people have helped their community and it shows how many good people there are in the world and the Mavericks are one of them.
