WACO (March 15, 2013)—More than two-dozen Waco firefighters battled a blaze Friday morning in an abandoned warehouse near the intersection of South 26th Street and Franklin Avenue that produced a cloud of thick black smoke visible for several miles.

The fire was under control by noon Friday.

Workers were in the process of dismantling the building at the time and fire investigators say it appears a welder they were using sparked the fire.

One worker was taken to a local hospital for treatment after suffering smoke inhalation, but no other injuries were reported.

The fire was reported at 10 a.m. and the building began to collapse just after 10:15 a.m.

Franklin Avenue was being closed to traffic in the area because of the number of emergency vehicles in the area.
