WHITNEY (April 1, 2013)—The Cross Christian Fellowship in Whitney burned to the ground the day before Easter, but in spite of the loss of the building, members gathered for services Sunday on the grounds.
Lightning caused the fire, authorities said Monday.
Whitney fire Chief Wayland Price said Whitney firefighters assisted the Lakeview volunteer department, along with other units from 2604 and White Bluff departments.
Firefighters were sent to the church at around 4 a.m. Saturday at 4700 Farm-to-Market 933.
The first crews on the scene reported flames and smoke coming from the building.
Price said it took firefighters about three hours to bring the fire under control and in the end the building was a total loss.
The congregation chose to have Easter Sunday services on the grounds in the shadow of the destroyed building, which had been operating as the church for about three years.
No one was injured, he said.
