MCGREGOR (March 5, 2013)--Plans for a bigger and better future were unveiled to citizens of McGregor Tuesday night, at the town’s annual Chamber of Commerce banquet.

For six months, city leaders in McGregor have been working on something they call “Vision 2030.”

It’s a guide for the small town of 5,000 people, mapping out economic strategy for the next 17 years.

Vision 2030 maps out some striking new developments for McGregor. The biggest development is something city leaders are calling “The Exchange.”

The city recently purchased a 3 acre tract of land off of 3rd street for $300,000. It’s a recognizable area in McGregor, the land houses an old agricultural co-op building that was built in the 1940’s.

The city plans on dishing out $2,000,000 to restore the old building. Upon completion, the building will serve as a multi-purpose community center, a farmers market, and will be used for concerts, banquets, and tourism.

Chamber of Commerce President, John Sneed, says “The Exchange” will transform downtown McGregor.

“We have a lot of growth coming in right and left in our community, and we wanted to be proactive with our future,” Sneed said.

“We want to address our community’s need for growth; we’d rather do it now than later.”

Another big facet to Vision 2030 will come from McGregor’s 9,000 acre industrial park.

Space-X currently owns 1,000 acres inside the park. City leaders want to certify 3,000-5,000 acres inside the park and make it a mega industrial park.

City Manager Kevin Evans says it’s the first step in bringing more jobs to town.

“We sit between Bell County and McLennan County. The population base of the two combined regions is pretty close to 800,000 people,” Evans said.

“That means something to large employers who want to move in.”
