(February 19, 2013)—A bill co-authored by State Rep. Ralph Sheffield, R-Temple, is aimed at easing the difficulty of deployments for military families by giving them more time together before deployments.
The bill would allow the children of troops 10 days of excused school absences when a parent or legal guardian is either preparing to deploy or has returned home after a deployment.
April Robbins' daughters Rhochelle and Keyla were 10 and 8 when their father, Spc. Rhone Robbins, left for is first deployment to Iraq.
"It's a scary time," April Robbins said.
"My kids constantly asked where's her father and just want to know how he's doing."
The bill was referred to the Public Education Committee.
