COPPERAS COVE (March 12, 2013) --- More than two-dozen Killeen teachers spent the day Thursday on the firing range, taking a free concealed handgun class.

In the wake of the massacre in December at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., some smaller school districts across the state have already adopted polices allowing some teachers to carry handguns in classrooms.

Hundreds of Central Texas teachers have taken the free CHL classes offered by Big Iron CHL in Copperas Cove since the school shooting.

"I was devastated as a teacher, a parent, and just as just a regular person your heart goes out to the families and just for the unnecessary loss," KISD teacher Heidi Span said.

The teachers were taking the class on the same day the Texas House Committee on Homeland Security and Public Safety heard testimony on several bills that would allow CHL holders to carry their guns into campus buildings.

A similar measure became one of the most contentious bills of the 2011 session before it failed.
